About Paycheck Calculations

Every worker's paycheck includes mandatory deductions. Understanding these helps you plan your budget and make informed financial decisions.

Federal Income Tax: Progressive tax based on your taxable income and filing status. The 2026 standard deduction is $15,000 (single), $30,000 (married filing jointly), or $22,500 (head of household).

State Income Tax: Varies by state. 9 states have no income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Other states use flat or graduated rates.

Social Security (FICA): 6.2% of gross pay up to $176,100 in 2026. Your employer matches this amount.

Medicare: 1.45% on all earnings. An additional 0.9% applies to income above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married).

Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums reduce your taxable income, lowering your overall tax burden.
